Clinical signs are variable and depend on the quantity ingested, the type of rodenticide and the interval until medical intervention.
Signs the owner may observe
- Lethargy – the animal is less active, sleeps more
- Exercise intolerance – tires quickly, refuses walks
- Pale mucous membranes – the gums become pale or white (a sign of anaemia)
- Dyspnoea – breathing is laboured, rapid or difficult
- Epistaxis – nosebleed
- Subcutaneous haematomas – visible bruising under the skin
- Blood in urine, faeces or vomit
Signs identified on clinical examination
- Internal haemorrhage – haemothorax (blood in the thoracic cavity), haemoperitoneum (blood in the abdomen)
- Extensive muscular haemorrhage
- Tachycardia and cardiovascular instability
Important: these signs may appear 2-5 days after ingestion. If the owner observes any of these symptoms and there is a possibility of contact with rat poison, an immediate visit to the veterinary surgeon is required. Every hour counts.
Diagnosis: how to confirm the intoxication
Diagnosis is based on:
- History – the record of possible contact with toxic substances
- Clinical suspicion – suggestive clinical signs
- Laboratory investigations – prolongation of the prothrombin time (PT) is often the first indicator of an anticoagulant-induced coagulopathy

Antidote therapy

Following acute treatment, massive haemorrhage can leave the animal with significant anaemia. Vitamin K1 vs vitamin K3: why the difference matters
It is important to emphasise that vitamin K3 (menadione) does not effectively correct the coagulopathy induced by anticoagulant rodenticides and is not considered a suitable therapeutic alternative in these intoxications.
Only vitamin K1 (phytomenadione) is the specific antidote, as it participates directly in the vitamin K recycling cycle required for the synthesis of coagulation factors.
For owners: if you purchase vitamin K from a pharmacy without a prescription, ensure that it is vitamin K1, not K3. Only the veterinary surgeon can determine the correct dose and duration of treatment. Do not administer anything without a veterinary consultation.
Prognosis and post-treatment monitoring
The prognosis is generally favourable when treatment is initiated early and the appropriate duration of therapy is observed.
